Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Binghamton Brewing Company joins several other local farm breweries.
Kristen Lyons and her husband Jason Gardner have wanted to open a brewery for years.
Their dream became a reality with some help from the state.
“The Farm Brewery License allows us to not only be a micro-brewery and sell growlers but we can actually for the first time sell pints across the bar,” said Lyons. “It’s a great thing, this legislation, and it has really helped to grow more craft breweries, and more breweries like us. It also gives the support we get from New York state in continuing to make licensing easier and continuing to come up with new ways to help encourage agriculture.”
The license requires all farm breweries to use 20 percent of their hops and grain from New York, thus helping the local agriculture and economy.
When the legislation was first passed, there were only about 100 acres of hops in all of the state. But now, that number has grown immensely, bringing New York back to where it started in the beer industry.
“Back in the 1800s, New York state was the No. 1 hop producer in the country, so it’s come really come full circle as it were,” said Lyons.
